Three books on Science, Philosophy and Literature released at Modi College, Patiala

The Multani Mal Modi College, Patiala today released three books of science, literature and philosophical thoughts in a special function organized to interact with the authors and translators and to discuss the relevance of these works. In this function the chief guest was Dr. Gurdarshan Singh Brar, Deputy DPI, Punjab Government. The three books released are, ‘Fungi of North–East India’ penned down by Dr. Ashwani Kumar Sharma, Dean, Life Sciences, ‘The Stories of Shakespeare’ selected and translated by Dr. Davinder Singh, Assistant Professor, Punjabi Department and the third one ‘Sukrat de Samvad’ translated by Dr. Parminder Singh, Assistant Professor, Punjabi Department.

College Principal Dr. Khushvinder Kumar welcomed the chief guest and writers and said that books are epitome of wisdom and knowledge. These books are important addition to the areas of science, literature and philosophy.

Dr. Gurdeep Singh Sandhu, Head, Punjabi Department discussed the themes of all the three books and said that books are like philosophers, guide and teacher and these books are products of hard work of the authors and translators.

In the review of the book, “Fungi of North-East India’ Dr. Bhanvi Wadhawan, Assistant Professor of Zoology discussed the content of the book and said that the data presented in this book is valuable for budding taxonomists and science researchers. She said that this book is a baseline reference and esteemed study for the experiment scientists, biotechnologists, ecologists etc working on fungi and its role in biodiversity.

Reviewing the second book, ‘The stories of Shakespeare’ Dr. Gurpreet Singh, Assistant Professor, Baba Farid College Bathinda’ explored the thematic and literary brilliance of storytelling by Shakespeare. He said that this book is an example of good translation in which the underlying spirit of the literary work is intact and alive.

In the review of the book, ‘Sukrat De Samvad’ Dr. Raswinder Singh’ elaborated the inter-connectivity between the western philosophy and eastern philosophy. He said that a work of philosophy must be translated with its cultural metaphors, socio-political contexts and the undertones of artistic expressions of the literary work. He said that this book is successfully able to achieve this fundamental objective of literature.

Dr. Gurdarshan Singh Brar in his address congratulated the writers and said that these works are valuable for the students and the general readers.

The vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Deepak Kumar, Assistant Professor, Punjabi Department and the stage was conducted by Dr. Veerpal Kaur, Assistant Professor, Punjabi Department.
